May 30-June 1, 2014 The Sixth Lotman Days at Tallinn University of Biographia sub specie semioticae will be held in Tallinn.
The theme of the conference is traditionally related to the scientific heritage of Yu. Lotman. This year it is defined by works devoted to the study of biography of sub specie semioticae: “Domestic behavior and typology of culture in the XVIII century.” “” The Treaty “and” handing themselves “as archetypal models of culture”, “biography – living face”, “literary biography in the historical and cultural context” and others.
The following issues are planned to be considered at the meetings:

- semiotic mechanisms of biographical texts generation;
- “Right to biography” as a cultural code;
- poetics, mythology and semiotics of everyday and social behavior: genres, styles, plots, masks;
- biography of the author as an informed cultural fact; the ways and purposes of mythologizing the biography of the author;
- ways of constructing the biography of a literary hero, the function of biographical information about a character in an artistic text;
- biography and hagiography: semiotics and poetics autobiography and confession: semiotics and poetics;
- problem of reliability of biographical and autobiographical texts;
- (auto) biographical texts as a functional element of the semiosphere;
- “Biography” in cultural studies;
- biography of Yu. M. Lotman: actual problems of study.
We would also like to discuss the methodology of major biographical projects: “Russian writers. 1800-1917: Dictionary of Biography (Great Russian Encyclopedia), Right to Name: XX Century Biography (Memorial Center), Estonian Biography and Oral History, and Estonian Biography as a Bearer of Cultural Memory yati (Tallinn University), the China Biographical Database Project and the African American National Biography Project (Harvard University), as well as the practice of compilers of various chronologies and chronicles of life and work, authors of scientific biographies, etc.
The conference will include sections in Russian and English. Statement of speech – 30 minutes (20 minutes report, 10 minutes discussion).
Organizational contribution is not provided, travel and accommodation – at the expense of participants.
